People believe they own and have a right to control their private information
Petronio uses the term Disclosure of Private Information (DPI) vs. self-disclosure like many other theorists for four main reasons.
Those reasons being;
- Information that we tell others typically is not about ourselves.
- Self Disclosure label usually is associated with interpersonal intimacy.
- When you self disclose to someone it is creating a closer personal tie but there are many other reasons as to why you are telling someone personal information.
- Disclosure of private information has a neutral connotation vs. self disclosure that is always known to have a positive feel.
- There are times where you can tell someone some information, and they might not want that information where it could really bring them down.
- This is something that happens a lot with bartenders or hairdressers. Where the customers just gets talking.
- Self disclosure focuses on only affecting the person of that dis-closer. Directs the attention to the content and how the confident handles the information they are given.
We like to think that we see our information as ours and it belongs to us. "Feelings one has the right to own private information." This can either be a good thing or a bad thing.
Positive: privacy strengthens our sense of autonomy and makes us feel less vulnerable
Negative: Can be a liability, we know something others do not and we are responsible for that info and will be held accountable for how we handle it.
